Classic French dining experience. Service was brisk and pleasant. The food was excellent and the atmosphere matched the food quality. Would definitely eat here again. Highly recommended.
My husband and I had never eaten at a French Restaurant before, so this was an exciting experience. We LOVED everything! The wine was delicious, the food was superb, the atmosphere was great, the service was FANTASTIC! Very attentive but not pushy, seemed happy to answer our questions, and was spot on with his suggestions! I can not speak highly... more
This was our first experience at Le Coq, it was on my list of to do's and it was amazing. First the service at the bar was lovely and relaxing as we waited just a few minutes for a table. (We hadn't made a reservation.) The atmosphere is great and the service was excellent. It was very busy which made... more
Four of us recently enjoyed a fabulous dinner here prior to going to the Neptune Theatre. Our waitress was wonderful - fast, friendly, and spot on with recommendations. I started with the mousse de foie gras de canard and then had the gnocchi à la parisienne . Both were very tasty. Others had the lobster boudin, scallops, and steak frites.... more
Didn't know what to expect, and loved every minute of it. It is French, so you need to like that style of cuisine, but if you do, the flavours are superb! You'll be rewarded by being more adventurous on the menu.
Discovered this restaurant the summer after our our family trip to Europe. Was really great to find such wonderful food with great value. Have visited many times afterwards and have never been disappointed.
Bistro Le Coq has a friendly/cosy vibe but a place you'd be comfortable with friends and business colleagues. We reserved a table for nine and when we arrived it was waiting for us. All party members enjoyed their meal but a couple of highlights was the French soup, scallops and steak. I had the bone marrow (it was so-so not... more
I always like trying to find a amazing places that serve great experiences through their food , service and ambiance. Bistro le Coq achieved all of that for me, the restaurant was cosy, the server was polite, friendly and most importantly knowledgeable of the offerings on the menu. I recommend this establishment for a "date night" , family gathering or... more
I have been so lucky lately in the restaurants I eaten in. I have to thank all my fellow reviewers here on Trip Advisor. I make my selections based on the revierwes I find here and I have not been disappointed. This restaurant is no different. The oysters were heavenly and very fresh. Everything was delish and perfect bistro food.... more
We enjoy eating here every time, even when we have to sit at the bar. The staff are very knowledgable and always recommend excellent, affordable wine pairings.
I visited Le Coq last week in search of an authentic French meal. I had wine, escargot, steak frites, creme brulee and cognac. I know! It was a shoot the works kind of night. The food was good, but nothing was "wow". The best dish was the escargot. I had a side order of mushrooms with the steak-6 pieces of mushroom that were dry... more
I wish I could remember our waitresses name because she was awesome! We wanted a wine recommendation and confidently brought us an excellent bottle. We did not ask for the price so were a bit concerned, but it turned out she brought us one of the cheapest bottles!! So not trying to rip us off at all. The food was... more
This was our first visit to the Bistro le Coq, and it was a satisfactory debut. The wait staff were considerate, the menu choices diverse, and all the meals were well-prepared and presented. Portions were on the large side, so unless you are a big eater, or like doggy bags, be conservative in your ordering. There is a fine list... more
I took my family for a Christmas brunch this morning and was thrilled to find out their brunch is as good as lunch and dinner.
We had a French waiter from Montreal, that was a nice touch. His service was excellent.
There were seven of us and we all loved our meals. And the champagne (the credit for that belongs...

We ate here twice during a long weekend visit - it is THAT good! Nice atmosphere - we sat at the bar. The food is delicious and the creme brulee is spectacular. Highly recommended!
We have eaten at the Bistro several times before performances at Neptune Theatre, which is just across the street from the restaurant. The Bistro continues to improve. On the latest visit, three of us had steak frites. It was perhaps the tastiest steak I have ever had. And the duck fat fries with seasoned mayo are beyond delicious. One other... more
Very good food especially the tuna tartar appetizer, friendly professional service. When you let them know you are going to the theater, they ensure you are finished and bill paid in time. Have eaten here several times both when attending theater and when friends want to take us out to dinner. Prices not sky high, good ambiance and good selection... more
Service was wonderful.
Food was better.
Great ambiance.
Dieters beware - they say there is no fat, salt, or cholesterol in the delicious food, but, duck fat fried chips - I wonder.
We will return again.
A Reservation is a good idea if you're noshing in prime time.
We have eaten here on two occasions and both have been great experiences. The food is excellent, the restaurant has a great atmosphere and the service is everything it should be. We will be back.... more
I wasn't sure about this restaurant when my husband suggested it. But yum, was it good. We had creeps which were just alright. But the mussels, pâté and cheese plates were all very tasty. Great drinks too!
Back again for another great meal at Bistro le Coq. We started with our usual dozen oysters which were as terrific as ever. The Bistro serves them with three different sauces and they are always good. We both ahead the the sea bass which is my wife's favourite and it was as good as every. We finished the meal with... more
Awesome place, food is great and service lovely! The decor is awesome and you feel so comfortable - great cocktail list! Yum!
Fantastic. All our meals were superb, the wine was well-chosen, the desserts were killer, and the service was lovely. Skip the bland boozecans elsewhere on Argyle and come here instead.
If you want to experience the feeling of being in Europe , then go to le Coq. The champagne sold by the glass, is an event in itself. Excellent food and service make this place an outstanding choice for both visitors and local Haligonians.
Lovely restaurant, but my braised chicken was tough and the white bean cassoulet a mushy mess with little flavor. For the first time in many years, I had to add salt to my meal. The green beans almondine were doing the backstroke in too much butter. Portions were generous, however. I would return to try something else since I'm a... more
We had a lovely dinner in this neighborhood restaurant this evening. Lovely venue, excellent meal and service. The staff is friendly and accommodating. Would love to eat here again and next time I'm in town, will certainly do so. Really excellent!!
Ate here twice during a short trip to Halifax - once for starters and drinks and once for dinner - both times great food, service and prices. We like casual bistros with great food and Lw Coq fits the bill. Both times we visited Ana served us and was very chatty and pleasant. I had mussles in a cream sauce... more
Ate at the bar, bartender was great. Onion Soup some of the best I've ever had. Pickled vegetables are to die for and a Rhubarb marmalade I wish I had the recipe for.
This is one of two places in town offering crepes. They are not big on crepes on this side of the continent. Sat outside on a warmish day and was served quickly and efficiently. The crepes of the day were fine served with some greens. No complaints
Good food, friendly service and lovely dining room - this is a very pleasant place to enjoy a light meal. The menu is varied and interesting, though not extensive. Prices are reasonable for the quality, but portions are on the small side.
This restaurant was a refreshing change from the many pub food options in the neighborhhood. The waiter's suggestions were genuinely helpful, the food excellent and perfectly prepared. I had scallops (not plentiful, but perfectly cooked) and hubby had a great tenderloin.
Im in halifax for an aikido seminar so there are people here from across canada and japan. We went with 7 people and we all really enjoyed it. The waitress was very knowledgable and offered detailed descriptions of the dishes when asked. I had the scallops which empowered good, friends had the recommended sole which they said was very good.
Not sure why I haven't reviewed bistro le coq yet, it is one of our favourites in the Halifax Restaurant scene ever since it opened. The food is excellent, the wine choices and cocktails are well done and imaginative and the staff are fun and professional to a fault. I think among our group, we have tasted every item in... more
My daughter made reservations for us at Le Coq on a weekend trip to Halifax. I assumed it would be good as all restaurants in the downtown tend to be, but this really blew me away! I knew they were serious when I asked for a Pinot Grigio and was politely informed that this was a French restaurant with only... more
Firstly, you should know that we inspected five other restaurants that we had not tried before we ended up where we didn't want to be - back at our old favourite: Bistro Le Coq.
And we're glad we - again - rejected all others in favour of this wonderful little restaurant. It is tough to beat.
My partner & I...

A wonderful place to eat in Halifax. A walk from most downtown hotels, it's close to where you are staying, and also close to bus routes, and simple to reach by car or taxi. Servers are always friendly, helpful and completely non-pretentious. I usually like to try many different places to eat while in town, but we find ourselves going... more
We went to celebrate a birthday but did not tell them. They came out with a lit candle in cake. Drinks that were not on the list they made. Helped with all aspects of the menu. Thank you Sara
I've never been to this restaurant so made a 530 reservation for myself and a friend. When I arrived I was seated against the wall next to table full of ladies (who I am sure were lovely) but I felt really crowded. I had asked on arrival about sitting at a table for 2 in the bar area but was... more
we have frequented this resto-bar more times than we can count and have always enjoyed the food, drinks and service. The staff has always been wonderfully out-going and attentive and the food is the best French cuisine in Halifax - bar none! We always visit Le Coq when we are in the city - we highly recommend it!
When I visited Bistro Le Coq last summer, I was impressed with ambience, service and food. Now, in the dark of winter, when the place should be more warm and welcoming, I found it rather cool and neutral in atmosphere--no sense of coziness, no sense of finding a haven from the elements.
Service was excellent, so nothing had changed there,...

Duck-fat fries.... Need I say more?
As soon as you step inside the door, you are immediately transported to Paris. Every element in le Coq has been carefully chosen to evoke that Joie-de-Vivre that I had only ever experienced in France.
French food, at its best, is a love letter to the raw ingredients. It is to be carefully cooked...

The decor is great and the food was okay but I wouldn't go back. Perhaps if you like French cuisine it would appeal to you.
We always visit Bistro Le Coq when in Halifax. Good french cuisine and wine to match. Dessert cheeseboard well worth ordering with a brief summary of each cheese and potted accompanishments. Fairly busy with pleasant buzz.
Having spent a number of years in France, we didn't have very high expectations of Le Coq. We were very pleasantly surprised. Everything was superb.
We chose it because it's so close to Neptune Theatre, and we'd been to the Argyle, Pipa, Carleton and the Shoe, all of which are good on a god day. Le Coq was far superior...

Loved the decor. The mussels, cheese plate and French Onion soup was delicious. Really all the food was excellent. The service was excellent and the prices were very reasonable. Would definatly go back!
while staying in the city we were out walking looking for a restaurant, we found this one and were interested in their menu. we knew nothing about it but decided to give it a try. a good decision, the staff were friendly and very helpful, the food was excellent and fairly priced. would definitely go back and are happy to... more
My wife and I were doing sight seeing on Argyle St. and got intrigued by the menu as we walked by. We didn't expect to find a french restaurant and the mussels and frites on the menu looked good, and well priced.
Inside they made a real effort to give you the impression of a french bistro complete with blue...

We dropped in based on a recommendation from a salesclerk in the area and were pleasantly surpized. The menu was very French and had a good selection, but no seafood. We ordered salads and they were both quite good. A small fresh piping hot baguette topped it off.
Really enjoyed our mussels with applewood bacon and a salad with duck confit....large, reasonably priced wines came in small carafes and were quite good....a voignier and a cote du rhone. Dessert was a freshly prepared chocolate and grand maniere souffle which we shared with cups of coffee to end the meal. We sat outside and had a delightful evening, great... more
For many years, Halifax has badly needed a restaurant which served basic Frech country cooking without all the silly bits and pieces of foam, fruit, flowers and frippery which is all the rage these days (and which is often an excuse for poor coooking). Bistro Le Voq is not that restaurant, but it is the closest we have yet come... more
Had lunch at this new french bistro on Argyle recently. They are in the old Mosaic spot on Argyle.
Our party had a mix of dishes; the chicken (poulet roti) was excellent - and a rather large portion for lunch, the fries and steak (steak frites) was also a very large dish.
I had their sausages and mashed potato (boudin blan) which was also very good. The mashed potato was laced with cream and...
