Batifole is an intimate small French restaurant that serves simple, comfortable cooking without pretense to the residents of Riverdale for almost 10 years. Now with a new owner. Our dinner menu is strait-forward evenly price at $10.00 and $22.00.The service is professional and friendly. With an extensive French wine list, the list features only carefully selected wines, many of which are... more
Batifole's menu may be reasonably priced, but not at the expense of well-executed dishes and intelligently sourced wines. Commonly thought to be the most authentic of Toronto's French restaurants, the unpretentious dining room takes a backseat to classic dishes like cassoulet and duck confit, which are the main draw for Riverdale residents and other lovers of Gallic cuisine.
Even though Batifole is out of our neighbourhood, my third visit to this establishment, even given the change in management, was memorable in the best possible way. Four of us, half ordered from the menu, other half from the specials. The specials were exactly that, special. Dessert was topped off with the best souffle I've ever had! Service was excellent, and our server's reccomended off-menu... more
Pascal Geffroy has kept the old favourites but added a great selection of new dishes as daily specials with a Provencal flair.Subtle changes in decor have made the room cosier and warmerIf you haven't been for awhile go back.A superb French bistro experience.
Great food; great presentation and decent price; chef came by to each table to talk to guests; service was a bit slow but restaurant was full.
This excellent restaurant is cozy, comfortable, and relaxed. The food is exceptional and atypical, the chef will come out of the kitchen and visit with the customers. We were not going to have any desert but he paid us a visit to thank us for coming and convinced us that his Peach Melba with his own canned peaches and home made ice cream was worth a try. We ordered it and it was superb. I... more
We decided to go this time to celebrate my partner's birthday. Surprisingly , there was no body but us that night and even though, the staff was very kind, they didn't offer us any special attention considering it was a birthday celebration.
Best Cassoulet I've had, maybe ever. The cod was perfectly sauced. PommeFrites were excellent. In retrospect, I should've gotten the creme brulle since it probably would've been out of this world, but the chocolate ganache cake on a pool of caramel was wonderful. Service was friendly and helpful.
Our food was great in terms of quality, ingredients and level of cooking. My only complaint was that it was a little salty, but that may just be my own preference. I loved that the chef came by to see how everything was (nice touch).
In terms of service, Ang was wonderful-she was responsive to our needs and very friendly. Our other server (I forget his name) was quite pretentious and...

My friend and I went with a Living Social coupon. We were warmly greeted at the door, and shown to a table. The server described the menu for us and we choose one of each of appetizer, entree and dessert. Our water glasses were refilled regularly, the baguette was fresh and warm, and the wine was delicious. The meal was very yummy. We had the terrine and pizza to start, a fish stew and pork... more
Batifole is one of the reasons I love my neighbourhood. It's always a fabulous meal, and is about as close as I'll get to France for at least another year. It's the place we go for a date, a nice dinner with family, a special birthday, or just if we feel like something that's on the nicer end of things. In several years of going to Batifole, I've never once been disappointed with anything. The... more
Worth the trip to east Chinatown from downtown. Every detail of the meal was carefully chosen + the atmosphere is great too.
Great place. French food at its best not stuffy, amazing flavours, approachable with some of the classics. Love the leg lamp.. Will be back ...my guest were raving about it all night.
Always consistency and perfection in all the menu and food.
In season dishes and specials. The wine list rocks.
Wait staff excellent
the place maybe small and not eye catching but the food was excellent. The waiter knew his food and wine pairing inside out.
A tiny french bistro in a part of toronto right out of a chinese reality show. Great chicken pate with a sugar crusted top but a little downhill from there. Both the backfin crabcake with salad dinner special and cassolet were 'ok'-but the white beans s
smal french bistro but so big on french food and amazing taste
"""Nothing fancy here, just nicely cooked and presented French bistro food. One of the few places that serves chaval (or it did, until a recent fooferaw in the press). Excellent reasonably priced wine list. Good place to impress your aunt from out of town"""
"""A lovely, authentic French bistro in one of Toronto's many Chinatowns. Despite the odd location, the food is wonderful, and the room - although spare - is warm and inviting. Food is well prepared and always delicious. The dessert crepes should not be miss"""
A neighbourhood gem. Amazing to find good french food in the middle of all the chinese food restaurants.
My biggest pet peeve is lukewarm food. All our food came hot and fresh and delicious. I'm a big foodie and its rare for a restaurant to surprise me. Every item we ordered was simple yet innovative. The escargot was abundant and so flavourful. The blue cheese on the steak was beautiful. The frites are fresh cut potatoes fried and salted perfectly. Even the bread was hot and fresh with... more
As they say - the best French restaurant in China Town East... quality French cuisine for a reasonable price. Local favourite. Always reliable.
I never really had a proper french cuisine before but I know what good food should taste like.
By far, the best French food I've had outside France! The Decor is actually much warmer then shown on the restaurant's website. The Quality of the delicious food is incredible and at a very low price... Their wine list is very impressive with many French wines, also with a very reasonable price tag. The Chef came out at the end of the night to talk with customers which we enjoyed. A $10 taxi... more
I went here last night with a good friend of mine. The food was FANTASTIC, everything we had last night was superb and the service was non-intrusive and relaxed.
My husband and I enjoyed the food at Batifole very much. It was a hot summer evening so the chilled Vichysoisse soup went down very well. I enjoyed the Cassoulet, but found the sausages a bit too garlicky. Otherwise it was very tasty. My husband enjoyed the steak very much. I don't like the fact that the vegetable dishes have to be ordered separately as sides a la carte. One thing is that it... more
While the decor is spare and the noise level echoes the food was incredibly good and the service terrific. As well the wine selection and staff knowledge was great. Worth going back
Great-value bistro: fries with tarragon mayo to die for; outstanding warmed bread; good pat and toothsome mains - variety of desserts. Extensive reasonably priced wines of southern France. Amiable service from chef-owner and gracious staff in a busy, sophisticated but simple room 5 mins by cart off the beaten track, with bargains accordingly.
Batifole is all about simplicity. And the room itself, obviously done on a shoestring budget, sends the same message. A little more imagination might have given the room a cozier feel, but compared to the area it is situated in, it’s a diamond in the rough. Despite occasional faults, owner Jean-Jacques Texier’s gutsy home-style fare could be just the ticket to inspire a French revolution in... more
Casual, comfortable and cozy, Batifole serves traditional French fare situated in a former residence. The menu changes daily, but you can always expect to find a long list of classic bistro dishes. Savor terrine de canard, a charcuterie platter, cassoulet, steak frites and other bistro-style fare, or enjoy something with a bit more contemporary edge. Prices are reasonable, with all starters... more
