Baltik countries cuisine...my 6th time in here..the recent one was a dinner treat by a friend, meat dishes never fails my taste buds,we had the balkan platter for 2, consisting of 6 kind of meat dishes with rice and potatoes, and salad it taste immaculately yummy, calamari for our appetizer this one sad to say wasnt really good dry and bland no taste at all, service was just average, decors are old... more
I had Karadjordjeva and Vesalica here. Karadjordjeva was delicious, exactly the same taste as one you can get in Serbia. Vesalica was not that good, I think that they used different piece of meat than one that is used for original Vesalica. Atmosphere was totally authentic with some Serbian music playing in the background. Overall, really good experience, there are very few restaurants around... more
This review is for their catering.
This place came highly recommended by a colleague and after she won a gold star for her recommendation of an Indian place we let her pick our staff social club lunch menu.
The food was so good. We ordered for about 45 people for our lunch today. Free delivery to Richmond from Burnaby. They arrived on time and the food was nice and hot. For $15 per person...

My favourite European food. I highly recommend the Cevapici (little sausages) They are always cooked perfectly and juicy.
Don't come here expecting outstanding service. The staff is overworked and usually only have a few servers working whenever I come. The food comes out fast though and for the price - it's worth it if you're not needy!
$12-20 average cost which comes with bread, rice and...

This restaurant features an excellent buffet on Sundays. Interesting assortment of a few vegetables (potatoes and sauerkraut) and meat: rolled pork roast, schnitzel, chicken, cevapcici. Also sauces, salads and desserts. All traditional' and filling but expertly prepared - refined taste. The dessert was simple but satisfying. All washed down with beer, wine and plum eau de vie. All extremely... more
Ok. If you love meat just go there. It's a huge plate of tasty meat . About 5 or 6 different types in your dish. It's delicious.
Man O Man, Europeans looooove their carbs ;)
I recently came here for a baptism reception... i never really tried Euro food before and I was pretty curious.. It was a buffet so Imagine my delight that i get to try a little bit of everything .
Apon gazing the plethora of food i noticed the scallop mashed potatoes, the shnitzel, the beautiful tender roast pork the roast chicken, sausages,...

I have already posted that I love this place and believe they prepare some of the best quality meals this city has to offer, and my family and I have been going there for years. Unfortunately, during the last few times we were there, our experience was ruined by an impersonal service we received by a waitress who is among the more recent staff there, as I don't recall seeing her until just a... more
If you know eastern European cuisine and especially the balkanic one or more specifically the one that is cooked along the middle Danube basin, this is the place to go. The restaurant is not pretentious but the food is executed in its original form. The location is not so good (had a better one 10 years ago), but otherwise Balkan... more
So much meat. Been here several times. This is a good spot for when you're craving the meat sweats.
These folks cook lovely food, not just great European style grilled meats but all the sides and veggies are good too. The building is plain and the block looks funky and has litter etc. Parking in the back of the building. That's all very unappealing but once you are inside it is a charming place to dine. Waiters give "old... more
I had a good experience here at the Balkan. I love the taste and the meal presentation. Smells nice and very filling. The dish comes with salad and bread.
My Croatian friend recommends me to try and I was very happy. The only thing was the rice which I think was still raw. The sausages and the different kinds of...

I recently went here, and I was not really sure what type of food I would be eating. The menu is a bit confusing. There is a little splash of German, a little splash of Greek, and a little splash of Italian on the menu.
I decided to try the Balkan platter and the chicken cutlet with mushroom sauce. The platter included a lot of meat and sides; one of the meats being pork neck. I wasn't sure if...

The food here is great but the location is not the best. On a busy industrial looking street so the patio is pretty useless even with the fence. If you are just looking for a great piece of meat or Serbian BBQ and don't care about the atmosphere or decor then go here.
I gotta admit, I was here 4 years ago the first time, and we did the buffet. I was a bit disappointed, it was all just meh, nothing special, This time we were smarter and we ordered the good stuff! I was afraid it won't be authentic, but it quite is! I loved Karadjordjeva, and I'd definitely recommend that to everyone. Cevapcici and raznjici were also really really good! Kupus salata is as good... more
Hrmmm.
Came here last weekend for a large family dinner, and I was pretty excited because of the positive reviews boasting a nice, cozy home-like atmosphere.
We came inside, and were greeted right away by a really friendly staff member, who ended up being our server. Our table was a pretty large group, but most of our group opted for the buffet, so it wasn't really overwhelming. It took quite...

Great food! Great price! I had a wonderful experience. I had no idea they would bring me so much food. When you go in make sure you have enough room for a lot of great food, or be sure you will have food for the next meal as well.
Bit run down place but their meat is good. Portion is decent size. Too bad they only have buffet on Sunday from 4pm to 8pm. Will revisit for sure.
Well I guess if you're a fan of huge piles of meat this would be the place for you but it really wasn't my thing. The rest of my family ordered meat platters (or should I say mountains?) but looking for a less meaty option i ordered the "Muckalicka" - a chicken and vegetable stew. Chicken was tough, and it was supposed to be served in a "spicy sauce" but there was no spice at all and the whole... more
If you are from former Yugoslavia or have a particular desire to taste food from this region, particularly Serbia, then this is the place for you.
Having been to many similar restaurants in Macedonia, Jersey, Chicago (the larger Macedonian and Serbian enclaves in the U.S. are in Chicago/Indiana and North Jersey), this place is a gem. Really good authentic food and surprisingly nice inside...

Recently my girlfriend and I decided to try the Balkan House since yelp had rated it decently and I live close by.
I feel bad saying it but I'll be honest, from the outside I never expected much from this place so I always avoided it. That was a mistake.
Inside the atmosphere screams FAMILY!!!! in a good way. Friendly staff, live music on occasion, and hearty food with huge portions. You feel...

This restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside, but the inside is nice and the food is excellent. The portions are large and the prices are moderate. This family-run restaurant doesn't usually require reservations, but it can't hurt.
The food IS a taste of Serbia/Croatia.
There is parking in the rear, and plenty of on-street parking.

Wow! So yummy!
We went on a Sunday afternoon and it was meat and potato heaven... with a creamy homestyle cake for dessert!
I was looking for a "family style" restaurant in the Edmonds/Burnaby/New West area, where we could linger and talk and eat for a couple of hours, and this was a fantastic choice. We had a very leisurely lunch, buffet, yummy food and coffee. Very reasonably priced!

I went to the Balkan House while on a business trip to Burnaby, merely as a curious backup option when the restaurant I had originally intended to visit turned out to be closed. Having visited the Balkan states several years before, I was curious to see if this restaurant's food came anywhere close to what I remembered. The result was... more
Do you like meat?
Of course you do.
Balkan House has meat, lots of meat.
The balkan platter has a lot of meat on it for ~$17, including some of the best homemade sausages I've ever had - rivaling what I've had in Germany and Austria.
They also give you Greek salad and fresh baked bread with most entrees.... but don't let the green stuff distract you from the important stuff (the meat).

Feed em large and feed em good I always say... but then again, I am of German and Slavic extraction... we think "portion control" means making sure everybody gets a third helping.
Took a dear friend here today for lunch. Here is the quick list:
1. Lost a star for c@!p parking
2. Lost a star for slooooow service. Holy cow.
3. Would have given the food a much higher star count.
4. Wonderful...

While the interior decor may be outdated, the place is always busy and upbeat, with a warm feel to it. Most importantly, you can choose from a variety of hearthy Mediterranean dishes for a great value, all freshly made: lamb chops, chicken skewers, veal and pork sausages, veal soup, schnitzels and steaks, stews, halibut, salads... The prices are unbeatable for... more
Really good food, especially the tripe soup (yeah, I know). A bit heavy for a meal overall, but very tasty if grilled meat is what you're looking for.
The decor is a little bit sad and old but I guess they want to imitate the atmosphere in Yugoslavia. I ordered a meat and vegetables stew or Muckalica. The meat was so so or flavorless if you prefer and the gravy too heavy. The mashed potatoes were tasteless and dry as if they had bought them in a supermarket,... more
In spite of the reviews here, I was very disappointed. The decor is sad, old and cold. I ordered a meat and vegetables stew or muckalica. The meat was drowned in a strange heavy juicy spicy gravy not good and flavorless. The mashed potatoes were tasteless and dry probably industrial like the rice. I had a bad breath and a very heavy stomach till the day after.
At last, there was a mistake on my...

My boyfriend and I went on Sunday for the buffet.
We were greeted warmly and told that coffee was complimentary with the buffet. The staff were good about taking our used plates, but seemed to forget to fill up our water glasses. We never got offered our coffee even after we were obviously finished and waiting for the bill. Maybe we had to ask for it?
The food was very good. There were a...

For the price, it's pretty good. $15.95 for a full buffet and there's a substantial meat selection. Most of the things on the menu is between $12-15 so the buffet is definitely worth it, especially if you like meat & potatoes. **Vegetarians, stay away from this restaurant b/c all you'll be eating is salad and dessert. **
Atmosphere: Feels very Eastern European. Family friendly and lots of...

This restaurant has been in my neighborhood for years, but I never really thought of going in until a friend suggested it. Actually, he said if he lived that close to it, he'd be there everyday, twice a day. (I'm a little worried about his arteries now).
This is a MEAT restaurant and you get some AMAZING MEAT.

When I step inside the door at the Balkan House, I feel like I've been transported to a roadside restaurant in the former Yugoslavia. The decor is just the same as I used to see there. A couple of warnings: the servings are generous. My parents split a schnitzel between...

This place is awesome... great selection of food, good prices if you're keeping your purse strings tightened - I especially recommend to check it out for lunch, they have brilliant Balkan lunch specials which always include a delicious home made soup.
Dark wood paneling and leather booths exude Old World charm at this Serbian restaurant serving Eastern European and Mediterranean foods. Try the Balkan platter. $. D (daily).
A favorite with the local Eastern European émigrés, Balkan House serves up the best of Southeastern Mediterranean cooking in huge portions. The room is reminiscent of a European hunting lodge, and the staff is always helpful and courteous. For a sampling of Balkan specialties, try the Balkan platter for one, which is generous enough to serve two people, as are most of the entrees. Popular items... more
