Brunch birthday party for 20 - fabulous
April 26, 2014

Having been at Avant Gout for dinner previously (review posted - excellent), we decided to hold our birthday brunch for our family of 20, adults, grandchildren...all ages, here. Except for a table for 4 and a table for 2, we took over the restaurant. We ordered off the regular menu as the choices were varied enough for all ages, from... more

Small, intimate, quiet with excellent food
February 01, 2014

This restaurant is located on Yonge Street, within a block of several restaurants. However, it is a quiet, comfortable place with a wonderful menu, excellent staff and food that was fabulous. Starting with the beet soup special, the beet salad or the arugula salad, all appetizers were plentiful, not overwhelming in size and perfect to start a meal. Next came... more

Superb

Excellent - small intimate place. Service is excellent, (the one waiter could be a double for the Rock former wrestler)
Food is excellent - beet salad, steak - frites (put a hold on the peppercorn sauce) and the great Moroccan dishes.
It is the best restaurant in the area - just a great place.

Not what it used to be
July 07, 2013

When Avant Gout was tucked into a little, old house down the street on Birch and facing the railroad tracks - an inauspicious venue for fine dining - the food and service were extraordinary and a growing crowd of appreciative regulars created the momentum that moved them down the street and into larger and more up-to-date facilities. Unfortunately, the chef... more

Overpriced, below Average Food
January 27, 2013

We went twice, because it is conveniently located, with excellent service, pleasant ambiance, but the food was not good. Gnocchi were home made, and excellent, but the sauce was terrible, something like from TV dinner box. We had soup and calamari as appetizers. The soups were tasty, however the servings were so small barely covering the bottom of the plate.... more

Worth going to Sunday brunch at this restaurant
January 22, 2013

Small restaurant but our experience was very good. Good quick service and we all really liked our food choices and the coffee/capuccinos. Very good omelettes --thick, tasty --I am not mad about mushrooms but they were very willing to add the goat cheese (which I do love) to another omelette. Will certainly try the lunch and dinners next.

Dined here in June of 2012. Went with three friends for a quick supper because my friend swore they have THE BEST SANGRIA on the planet. Sometimes they are out of it, she warned me. Unfortunately this was one of those times. Wish I could of tried it.
Ate the beet salad, and mushroom agnolotti (like ravioli.) The pasta was... more

Love everything about it. Brunch is great too but gets busy. For dinner salmon tagine is very good and the chocolate lava cake is amazing

Small, intimate with good service
December 14, 2011

There aren't many tables and they were full but I went with a friend who recommended it. The small menu had a good selection and with the specials there was good choice. Tim, the only waiter, was excellent. There was an adequate choice of wines in all price ranges. The meal was well paced and the place has a great... more

Friendly service but unpredictable food - never more than satisfactory, sometimes considerably below that level.

A wonderfully intimate neighbourhood place with very good French/Med food. Service is pleasant and the ambience is casual. You'll be able to find duck and lamb tagine in this Rosedale haunt that caters to locals as much as those seeking out a special pl

Cozy Moroccan-influenced French bistro. Start with a spicy samosa or red leek chili mussels. Slow-braised Moroccan lamb shanks are a popular entree; Moroccan-spiced chicken breast and duck breast in pomegranate sauce have creative flair. The menu also features homemade pastas and daily specials. Dinner daily; weekend brunch. Casual. Entees: $17-$26. AE, MC, V.

A self-professed eclectic eatery, Avant Gout provides a fun-filled place for young locals in the swanky Rosedale area. The atmosphere is great: moody red walls and kitschy paraphernalia. It’s a perfect place for friends or couples who no longer have anything important to say to one other. If only the food was as engaging as the decor. It’s warm, cozy, quirky, with great cheery service and an... more

"Often overflowing with Rosedalites", this "local gem" turns out an "eclectic mix" of "well-crafted" French-Moroccan dishes in a "tiny yet relaxed bistro" setting; though not cheap, devotees insist prices are "shockingly moderate" for the "moneyed neighbourhood."
