Athene's is smack in the heart of Broadway's Hellenic district and the food is solid, which means that in addition to such gems as arni psito (slow-roasted lamb shoulder, $16.95) and kalamaris skaras (marinated, charbroiled squid, $14.95), there is the requisite baked lasagne ($12.95) and 16 different pizza selections. Stick with the traditional items and you'll do just fine. And, while West... more
Athene’s is smack in the heart of Broadway’s Hellenic district and, as Frank said, “If you can make it there you can make it anywhere.” The food is solid, which means that in addition to such gems as arni psito (slow-roasted lamb shoulder, $16.95) and kalamaris skaras (marinated, charbroiled squid $13.95), there is the requisite baked lasagne ($10.95) and a page of pizza selections. After initially having some difficulty finding Athene’s courtesy of my lackadaisical reliance on Google Maps, we found our way to the front entrance on a late weekday evening. Right away, the dimly lit interior and relaxed atmosphere made me feel as if we were being welcomed into the living room of a beloved heritage home. Inside, the place was already abuzz with a few full tables of diners as... more
To start, I had the lamb and it was delicious, but the greatest thing happened there, George our fabulous and amazing waiter saved my life. Life is fragile, thanks to my new hero George, I am here today. While dining at Athene's I choked on a piece of food, and had no air, I got up & moved towards the... more
This place was just awful. It was empty when we arrived for lunch and it stayed that way for our entire meal. I ordered a beef and chicken souvalaki meal. Where do I start...
Cons:
-The greek salad was not fresh. I don't like when my cucumbers taste pickled and that is precisely what they tasted like. There were no...

We love going to Athenes for their Greek food, and usually go for the souvlaki - we love the lamb or chicken. The service and value here are great, and the place has a nice atmosphere. It is a nice cosy place to sit inside in winter, and fun outdoor setting when the weather is warm. On top of all... more
What I like about this place is that besides the usual Greek fare, there were quite a few authentic dishes. The chicken livers were outstanding as an appetizer and mousaka and other Greek dishes were on par with some more expensive places. I would not hesitate to return.
The beef, lamb and chicken souvlakia are all very good, although my personal favourite is the beef. The pizzas, calamari and baked spaghetti are good too. What sets Athene`s apart for me is their hummus and the roast potatoes.
Service is top notch. Athene`s has been a family favourite for many years and still holds top spot as our ``treat``...

This is plebian Greek food. They do a nice job of service and food preparation. We find it also to be reasonable for the plate of food you receive for the price.
My family loves Greek cuisine, and we've tried a number of places during our travels and experiences, from Singapore (Blu Kousina), Manila (Cafe Mediterranean), Toronto (Zorba's), Vancouver (Simpatico)... So this one was up against tough competition, if it was competition. But it really isn't. As long as the place meets our expectations of genuine Greek food, quality and tasty and... more
The interesting lunch box mounted high over the bar once belonged to a previous owner. It has been preserved to show the humble origins of Athere's. We used an Entertainment coupon while visiting Vancouver from the States, aftger seeing that Athene's was well reviwed on Tripadvisor. We always do this before using a coupon or discount at any restaurant we... more
Had the lamb special shoulder; I am not normally a huge fan of lamb but I asked for a taster and it was very good. The "real meal" did not disappoint. It was a large enough portion, the meat was tender and the sides were very tasty. Wife had the chicken dish (stuffed with feta) and it was also delicious.... more
Only once, was good. Sweet atmosphere. Sit by the fire.
Located in the Greek neighborhood of Kitsilano, Athene’s has been serving up authentic Hellenic fare for over twenty-five years. The worn wood floors and frescoed walls add a touch of European flair. Highlights on the menu include the calamari, which is always tender and a selection of lamb dishes that are sure to please. Try a starter of saganaki, the popular fried Greek cheeses doused in... more
