After a relaxing massage, my tummy said feed me some Indian food. So I walked into the restaurant and was not greeted as how a restaurant hostess should greet you. The hostess just stared at me like a deer caught in headlights. Gave me the impression that I was not in the right place.
Ordered a sweet lassi, which tasted like a thick Greek yogurt. No sweetness.
I also ordered the vegetable...

The food here is pretty good, but not the best Indian food I've had. Nothing about the food made it really stand out. I thought the service was friendly, but a bit slow. The place has very good ambience though.
Just for the ambience alone I would go back to this place. It helps that the food is great, too. The price is also good, and the service was exceptional during our visit. Astha might just be the best Indian restaurant in town.
I usually do not write negative reviews but this unpleasant experience must be brought to the attention of the management. There was only one hostess/waitress there who made every effort to spoil the otherwise perfect ambience this restaurant had to offer for our anniversary lunch. There was no smile or greeting upon entering, just a blank stare and - "table... more
The prices are a little high but the food is amazing and the atmosphere is so tranquil. Perfect for date night!
Although the decor is pleasant, it doesn't make up for the chef not being able to prepare meals that are on the menu, not having items available and not having drinks available. This has happened on more than one occasion, slow service.
the food tastes really authentic and full of flavor, i ate at other indian restaurants they were good but something about astha is supreme, and theyre very consistant every time i eat there its the same great experience
My wife and I and another couple dined at Astha last evening. It was my first time dining at Astha. The interior is dark with brocade curtain covering the windows. The walls are decorated with modern Indian relief artworks and the colour scheme of walls and decor all match. The music was contemporary Indian dance/pop music, very upbeat. The bathroom... more
I ordered take out.. When I went to pick it up the guy wouldn't even look at me when he handed me the food and didn't say two words. The restaurant itself was dark and the menu is expensive. The food was good but I wouldn't say its worth the price. I'd rather go somewhere that I won't be judged... more
The best Indian food I have experienced, and in a very intimate, comfortable setting despite its strip mall location.
Good place, good food, nice staff. But I don't like the inside of the building. Too dark, not really comfi.
We have tried every Indian restaurant in Red Deer. Astha does that something extra to the dishes. We had Chicken Korma and Beef Vindaloo. They use great cuts of meat and the sauces are multi layered. You won't find a big chunk of fat or gristle in their dishes. We think the restaurant has the best ambience in Red Deer.... more
The food was tasty but a bit overpriced. The service is quite good. The portion sizes are are too small:((
The food here is excellent. I had the Lamb Vindaloo, and it was just perfect. Plus, the portions were massive... I've never seen so much rice. Very satisfying. It is expensive, but you get what you pay for.
The restaurant itself is beautiful, quiet and pleasant. Really another world when you step in from the plaza surroundings. Everything here is...

Great food, and service. The servers have always provided me with top notch recommendations. Has a darker ambiance with some decor that catches the eye.
We've lived in the Red Deer area for over two years now and this is the first decent restaurant with decent food and decent service that we have been to. We recommend this restaurant to people who are well versed in Indian cuisine as well as to those who are not. A real treat and we will be going back... more
The service was really slow on the night we were there, and the waiter a bit chattier than is our preference. They had only two samosas left for our group of five, and it was early evening. The saag paneer was so-so, but the saffron rice and the eggplant dish were delicious, as was the garlic naan. The place was... more
Best atmosphere for punjab style indian cuisine. Not inexpensive unless you take time for the lunch menu. Locally owned and managed. Super clean and great food. A must if you love the food.
Delicious indian food and amazing appetizers. For this carnivore, I was amazed how much I enjoyed the vegetable dishes- I mean I really enjoyed the eggplant! The sampler of beef, chicken, lamb and shrimp was so tasty and we ordered extra naan bread just to sop up the sauces. Cool music , soft lights and lush decor make it great... more
waiter said they were out of this and that things on the menu, then urged us to try a dish which we did, it was ok, but tasted like the sauces you buy at the grocery store, the muchrooms were obviously from a can, not fresh. this is supposed to be a fine dining atmosphere (and prices reflect that) so... more
The food the atmosphere and the waiter were great. Thought it was a bit overpriced but the food was soooo good.
Quiet and friendly location with good quick service and terrific food. Best in the city! The server was helpful in meal selection.
We had lamb and butter chicken with coconut rice and naan. SO GOOD! Our meal was ALL recommended by the staff.
I don't care fore lamb, but since one only lives once, thought we would try it as it was recommended. It was cooked so nicely, falls apart in your mouth- going back again!
Fantastic! An unassuming location in a strip mall, the small room is nicely decorated. We were a group of three, and we ordered 3 dishes to share with saffron rice & nan bread. We went with the chicken korma, bhuna lamb & paneer maju butter masala. So good! And the portion sizes were just right, filling us up without any leftovers. The mango lassis were also delicious. I would love to come here... more
a little on the pricier side but good. i love the naan bread - a must try. the butter chicken is sooooo good! try if it is your first indian experience.
Enjoyed the food but thought the portions were a bit on the small side. Aside from that It was very enjoyable to go for diner there.
A nice evening style place, small seating area. NOT SPICY ENOUGH. Good tasty curry and non-curry dishes here. Nan bread etc. A watered down Indian style restaurant for local Red Deerites to attempt some spice.
The restaurant space is small, so it can feel a bit crowded when there is a lot of people there, but the decor is unique, and the food is delicious. A bit pricier than some of the other Indian restaurants in Red Deer, but definitely worth checking out.
In a city where "barely adequate" can describe the overwhelming majority of the restaurants, this really stands out!
We have eaten here several times now, and have never had less than a wonderful experience. In fact, this is the only restaurant in Red Deer that we will make the trip for!
It was a toss up between this place and Burger Boys. My stomach was craving Indian so I followed my stomach!
First off, I'm not an Indian cuisine connoisseur so I can't tell you if this is as authentic as it gets, but it was pretty good in my books. I came here for lunch and ordered a lunch option which allows you to pick a sampler of three dishes - I chose butter chicken (I know, typical...),...

We did not make a reservation but in this small place there was still lot's of seating. The server was well dressed to go with the atmosphere though extremely casual with us. I would not recommend Astha if you are looking for fine dining. The menu is overpriced on many items, such as on bread and rice. The food taste... more
We had two dishes, as suggested by our most helpful waiter, one of lamb and one of chicken, saffron rice and a sweet nan bread with coconut and dried fruit.
We drank chai with cream, which was also very good.
Good menu, plenty of choices and spiced to suit the individual.
When I recently enjoyed lunch here, we seemed to have missed the crowds. Seriously. We went at about 1:30pm & we were the only customers. (I believe they close at 2pm until dinner.) That said, the service was friendly & excellent.
We had the butter chicken from their lunch menu. It was scrumptious! Apparently they were trying out a new chef; he did an excellent job. Though, as it was my first...

It was date night after a pretty hectic week of work, so we decided to go somewhere a little more unique-somewhere we'd never been before. The atmosphere set the... more
The first time we went we were not sure what to expect as teh owner came to our table andchatted for a minute- the food smelled good- the ambiance was good but it was small. I loved Astha! The food was excellent as was the service and atmosphere. Just I bit on the expensive side but well worth it. FYI - the map shown on the Trip Advisor page shows the wrong location - the restaurant is on the north side of 67th street, in a small shopping center on Taylor (next to Subway).
Review of Astha Fine Indian Cuisine
- I had an ok experience the first time, but on another visit we couldn't order what we wanted and the food was not fresh - used canned mushrooms! won't go back.
Fantastic! We gave this restaurant a try based on the review by Rob G. He was bang on!! Absolutely fantastic decor and food. The staff was excellent and made great recommendations on what we should have for dinner. Went with the Channa Masala vegetarian option as well as the Bhuna Lamb dish. Both were great and we couldn't get enough of the naan bread. For 2 people we spent around $60, so we... more
Doug Cox, premier slide guitar player commented when he was in Red Deer: he'd been touring with Taj Mahal and Taj only ate at the best East Indian eateries. So, Doug Cox has eaten in the best East Indian restaurants in Canada. And he says Astha is the very best East Indian food he's ever eaten in a restaurant. You can't get a better recommendation that. I love the food at Astha - everything... more
We have been there 4 times now and we think it's great. Fast service and friendly wait staff. If you can fault them for anything, it is that it is too small in there so you don't really have any privacy. But it hasn't caused us to have bad time there. I find the food great and recommend the butter... more
Astha is trying hard to be something special but the small tables placed too close together don't lend well to leisurely dining. Our table was close to the door with a pony wall where people waited for their table. One guy had his elbows on the wall, loudly chatting on his cell. The food was just okay - and more... more
Excellent Indian Cuisine, great atmosphere and friendly staff. Food quality was great and all the dishes we tried were tasty and filling.
Only down side would be the price was a little above average, but other than that it was a great experience.
warm and excellent ambience and the food ..............to die for. prepared to your preference -spicey to mild as tolerated. Sonia a great hostess.
It took over an hour to get our meal.
My favorite restaurant right now. Lush, sensual decorating and real Indian food from a owner who cares. Most nights Sonya is in the kitchen but takes time to talk to customers and ask about their experience. The kitchen will 'kick up' anything if you ask and they have live music Thurs-Sat. Most of the vegetable dishes here rival the meat... more
