I avoided going here for a long time because I hate small stores and restaurants, but now I'm addicted. The food is amazing (I always go for one of the kebabs, my partner goes for the curry, but they're both great.) The best naan I've ever had, and the rice is really fluffy and flavourful.
I often get it to...

This was my first Afghan food experience and it was very enjoyable. The spices are quite nice and I would recommend this to anyone who likes curry but doesn't want the same thing that every Asian restaurant offers. This is a hidden gem for sure!
The Afghan Restaurant is a very small bistro style restaurant that seats about 12-16 people. My boyfriend and I went there for lunch and it was our first visit. We were greeted by the owner who was very friendly. We noticed right away the decorations which were modest but interesting and nice. We looked at the menu and had a... more
Don't be deceived by the small outside appearance, the food here was delicious. We had the chicken special, samosa's and naan bread and we really enjoyed it. There was just enough spice, the food was zingy without that burning you get with some ethnic foods. There was seating for 12 people but we had take out, which we will definitely... more
Having found this place by accident while looking for pizza I consider myself to be very lucky!
The service was prompt and friendly and vegan fare is readily available.
I enjoy afghani and many other Similar cuisines and this eponymously named restaurant did not disappoint!
I will be back. Thanks
One of the more delicious places I've eaten at. I shared a lamb plate with a friend for a snack in the middle of the afternoon. I would love to come here again for a full meal! It was a good price, and really delicious. I'll need to try more on the menu.
my only issue was that while really...

The Afghan Restaurant is a tiny place at the very end of Duckworth Street. My wife and I had dinner there on a quiet Tuesday night. The food was served quick and hot and was very tasty and filling. I cannot speak to the authenticity of the cuisine but it was very similar to Greek or Turkish, so was probably... more
This place is easily one of the best in the city I think. The last time I was there I had two pakoras, a bowl of lentil soup, and the chicken dish with a can of drink. For what was a starter, appetizer and main dish I paid 17! You can’t beat the price, not to mention the food was outstanding. The service was one of the best in the city too. The older woman who works there is the sweetest old... more
This is a great place for a filling, delicious meal on the cheap. I had the assorted kebab, samosas and pakoras. All were spicy (not too spicy though...don't be scared) and delicious. St. John's has more than its share of restaurants but most of them are pricey. The Afghan Restaurant on Duckworth is one of the few places to fill... more
I love curry and was tickled pink to try this place's curry chicken. No disappointment! The food was tasty, spicy and overall just delicious. The portions were large for a take-out order. I had a chicken and vegetable wrap. It kind of reminded me of a donair without the sauce. The spices on the chicken were addictive. I can't wait... more
The food is not mindblowing. I find that the menu is a bit limited and the food can be too salty and bland, especially after eating at Afghan restaurants in Toronto. That said, the price really sets this place apart. If you’re looking for a cheap lunch you could really do a lot worse in this city. I’m not a regular here but occasionally it’s a nice change.
It's a little restaurant, very friendly owner, nice decoration.
I had a very good chicken curry with rice, it comes with lentils, cauliflower as well as some veggies.
This was very tasty, feeling and cheap. If you're coming to St. John's you should try it, I never would have guessed that I will have amazing Afghan food in Newfoundland. Good...

After wanting to eat at Afghan for quite a while, I finally ate here with my husband last week. The prices are amazing for St. John's, the portions are big and the food is delicious. After being let down with pricey meals in St. John's lately, I was thrilled to eat a delicious, inexpensive meal.
We started with pakora and...

Would like you more if you were not microwaved :(
Still good though :)
But not great :(
…would go back :)
My favourite restaurant in St. John's! Good hours, friendly family staff, excellent prices, and a cute little dining room. The food is always delicious!
I love this place and try to eat here at least once a week. It is small and quaint, with a lovely family who runs it. The Samosas are the best I have ever tried and I absolutely love their combo plates. If you go, ask for a side of green chile chutney, it is not on the menu or offered, but it is a delicious additon to their food. So amazing and the owners are appreciative of your business. Eat... more
98 out of 100. i recommend reservations as it is packed often!
The Afghan is a landmark on Duckworth street. The chicken curry is a steal for 10 bucks. Chunks of all white chicken, lentils, basmati, ever changing veggies and lush marsala sauce. Unblelievable. It gets better though, the chicken kebab might be the best wrap in the city. Tandoori(?) style chicken with onion, cucumber, peppers and lettuce all wrapped inside two naan breads with a creamy... more
Flavourful food but on the greasy side. Very similar to Indian-style cuisine. Delish baclava!
Went there for the first time last week.Very unimpressed.
Owner was beyond kind. The cook was a lovely lady. Very small place. Food was inexpensive and great
dI have been here several times over the last few years and really liked it. My kids (14 and 12 ) like it very much as well. I look for small ethnic family run restaurants wherwever as i find that I get great, authentic taste, and value. You just know that the food is good for you too.

Lovely people, lovely food, adding a cosmopolitan touch to North America's oldest English Irish City. I have suggested to them that they would be filthy rich if they served deep fried foods as at the start of George Street they likely have the best traffic location in the Province but they remain true to their culture.
As an “ethnic” food afficionado who’s eaten everything from broiled dog to rice cakes up river in Kalimantan I’d have to say: vile. Microwaved, bland (surprisingly) leftovers. Afghani food is great, but this place ain’t.
We went here for a nice dinner, and were highly impressed by the relaxed atmosphere and devotion to our food. The assorted kebabs, for the $11, are well worth it; the meat is good, the flavor is fantastic and the bread is definitely filling. The specials are also a really good deal as well. We’re definitely going back very soon.
I love this place. Whenever I’m in St. John’s, I make a point of getting a lunch here. It really does feel like a family restaurant, as though this is what they would make at home for the family dinner. Great proportions for under ten dollars. PS: Get a baklava and a mango lassi for the full experience. Great, great place.
Love this place. Great food, a real jem in St. John’s.
Just enjoyed a delicious lunch here today! I’d heard good things about this restaurant all year, and finally made it in. I ate a great vegetarian meal of rice and about 8 other savory treats piled on top that left me very full and happy. I’ll definitely be back again for more.
We enjoyed the food. It was delicious!
Don’t let the decor fool you…. the food is SO delicious. And inexpensive. And try the Baklava… yum.
There were 3 women there, a woman and her young daughter, and an elderly woman there when I visited. You really got the feeling that these were authentic family recipes, and there were 3 generations of that family in the room. Very friendly…
The decor is unassuming, the traditional Afghani music is grand, but at the end of the day, we go to restaurants to eat, and here there is no disappointment. The portions are large, the food is exquisite, and the Afghani woman who runs the place cooks everything herself, and is extremely friendly as well. Decor be damned, this place is highly recommended.
I was visiting in St. John's and wandering Duckworth looking for someplace interesting to eat. Imagine my surprise to see an Afghan resto in Newf! The atmosphere certainly leaves something to be desired - although there is artwork on the walls - the room has about 5 tiny tables and just lacks ambience. But, I was there for the food... more
okay, let's be honest...the place isn't exactly pleasing to the eye, it's too quiet, and it's a bit tacky. BUT in saying this, The Afghan Restaurant is just one of those places that everyone has to experience. It's an abnormal restaurant, that is a great place for an uber casual bite to eat. It's best to take someone there that... more
I have walked by this restaurant many times but never ventured in, not knowing what Afghani food would entail. I finally tried it for lunch and was pleasantly surprised.
I was there today with three friends and we all agreed that the food was fantastic! I had the Afghan Lamb Kebab which was quite delicious. It consisted of tender juicy pieces of lamb, along with thinly sliced cabbage and onions all on two warm pieces of naan. The atmosphere was what I expected it to be but with great friends, conversation was all I needed. Great and friendly staff. Will be back... more
Unless you think like Karl Wells, you don’t come here for the ambiance or the wine list! My only complaint the last time I ate here,was-the food was a tad too salty. You don’t really need ANY salt for this type of food.
Okay, so the atmosphere could use a little sprucing up, but if you’re going to mention the ambience, you have to give that two foot high stack of National Geographic magazines a nod. Seriously. I could spend HOURS in there sucking back frozen mango thingies and reading about Petra and Texas and Greenland…if it weren’t for the little lady staring at me from behind the counter.

I agree, the atmosphere could improve a lot. It’s often really quiet, all i can hear is the sound of my own uncomfortable chewing. Tasty and unique though.
I like this place and I like the idea of this place. Simple, inexpensive food which I imagine the cook makes and serves for her own family.
I would love to see this place live up to its potential. Come on guys, put some more effort!
