Happy Bride

I recently bought my wedding gown at The Proper Topper located in Caledonia. The shop is a little small but has a great selection of wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses. The staff was very friendly and willing to work with me by giving me plenty of suggestions to find my gown. All and all I was very pleased with the overall experience. Haven't bought my bridesmaids yet but I'll probably get them here based on pricing and selection. I'm sure most people would love the store.

Shop Elsewhere!!!!!!

If you run into ANY problems with this shop, you will be told “it can happen to anyone and any shop”. You will not be treated nicely, fairly or politely. You will be made to feel small and you will feel like it’s your fault. This is what happened to me at The Proper Topper in Caledonia. NEVER in my life have I received such poor customer service. “Poor” is even too nice of a word.

After I had chosen my dress, waited the specified amount of time for it to come in, I excitedly went to pick up the dress. My mistake was not trying it on in the store, as I was by myself, and had all the girls waiting at home for me to try it on. I paid for the dress and left. Much to my disappointment, with my mother and bridesmaids waiting in the living room, my sister tells me there is no way she can zip up the dress passed my hips. We return to the store, upset, to tell Mary, the store owner. Once I try it on for her, we realize that it not only doesn’t fit, but it’s the wrong colour AND a different material from her sample dress. It takes a lot of convincing from myself and my bridesmaids for Mary to see this colour and material difference. She even tells my maid of honour to not touch the sample dress! We were feeling the material! My dress felt heavy, cheap, was diamond white and had a sheen. The sample dress was ivory (what I ordered), felt lighter and softer. She starts getting defensive about the dress, because clearly we are upset, and everything from this point on goes downhill. Mary’s mistake happens now: she takes sides with the manufacturer and not with me, her customer. Suddenly, she is telling me I am over-reacting, that it’s not a big deal, that this could happen to anyone. I have tears in my eyes and she is scolding me! The three of us believe we were treated with such disrespect because we are young. Perhaps if we were in our 30s instead of our 20s she would have treated us better. I don’t know. She tells me I should take the sample dress, which is a size 10. I ordered a size 4. The sample dress, which has been there since I was in the store 5 months ago, has been tried on, has pulls and a stain. No discount, but she says she will alter the dress to fit me. I point out that the bust, which has boning and an intricate material wrap, can not be made smaller. She measures and says “true, it’s 4 inches too big”. She still says I should think about it, because it’s the “right dress, colour, material”. I am appalled.

The story goes on and on. Many phone calls are exchanged because I live hours from the shop itself. By the third phone call, I am upset, do not want to deal with Mary anymore because she does not have answers for me. On Saturday she tells me she will have an answer by Wednesday. On Wednesday, an answer by Friday. On Friday, by Monday! I tell her that I do not want to be strung along anymore. I felt like she was taking advantage of me. She had my full payment and my dress. I even paid for an expensive hair piece that was ordered at the same time as the dress, which she “did not receive yet”... the order was placed 5 months prior!! Five months for a hair piece! I think that she just forgot to order it.

After everything was exchanged over the phone, Mary said she was spending all this time calling the manufacturers for me when in fact she was very busy with her other customers. I should have been the priority and I know this now. I should not have been treated that way. I asked for a refund so that I did not have to deal with her anymore. My wedding is less than 5 months away at this point and as far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t look like I’m going to get the dress I ordered. She tells me “the money means nothing to me, do you think $1000 means anything to me? I’ve been in business for 26 years!” It was $1200 by the way. So Mary, if the money means nothing to you, why cant you give me a refund so I can be on my way to start over and find a dress?? I don’t even want to wear the dress anymore because of all the bad connotations it now has with The Proper Topper and Mary! I told Mary I would be sending my mother-in-law in to speak with her on my behalf since we were just yelling at each other over the phone at this point. She tells me that she will ask her to leave the store. Essentially, she will throw out a potential customer (mother of the bride dresses, HELLO!) on my behalf. I am appalled. The phone conversation continues with Mary telling me to get over it, stop telling people, ‘trust her’ and then she ends up hanging up on me when I am trying to be polite and NOT hang up on her. I said “Mary I don’t feel like you are listening to me, so is this conversation over?” CLICK. She hangs up.

TWO WEEKS LATER! She produces the correct dress and the hair piece! How is this possible? By the way, when I purchased the dress, she tells me the dress is from MONTREAL. Since all the tags in the dresses are ripped out, I trust her. When I receive my dress, the tags are on it alright, with “Made in China’ staring me in the face. I’m basically devastated. Now that I have the manufacturer, I go online and find the dress for the first time... with prices as low as $250 and ships within 21 days... it’s another slap in the face. When I go to pick up the new dress, does Mary apologize? Does she give me any refund? Anything for free? Does she do ANYTHING AT ALL? Take a guess. I will regret this purchase for the rest of my life. If I can’t sell this dress, probably for a huge loss, I will forever and always tell every single person I can about the terrible experience I had at The Proper Topper. I don’t think anybody works for her and I bet I know why.

Brides, stay away!

Owner was rude, hung up on me 2 times. She said that my wedding was not going to be good because I had no family in it..?? She made personal attacks over the phone to me. She tried to hold a fully paid for dress hostage until she got payment for something completely different. She was very unprofessional. Worst experience out of all the planning for the wedding. I strongly urge you not to go there. You have been warned.

Average store but a bit small.
