“Check your diet at the door” and enjoy “fabulous”, “authentic” fish ’n’ chips “fresh out of the fryer” at this “family-run” Midtown “tradition”; the decor may have “barely changed” since its 1950 debut, but “competitive prices”, “pleasant service” and, most of all, “old-fashioned” fare “done right” leave fans “loving the whole dining experience”; P.S. closes by 7 PM most nights.

So what if it's deep-fried and bad for you? It's hard to care when you're diving into a big plate o' fish and chips at Penrose's (Mt. Pleasant, south of Eglinton), one of the oldest fish & chip shops in Toronto.Jeff and I are not the only ones in search of artery-clogging goodness; inevitably there's a line-up whenever we visit. If we want our fish & chips to go, they'll sprinkle it with malt... more

I don't think the owner likes having customers

I was looking forward to trying this F&C shop for some time before I went, so you can imagine my disappointment when you read about all the problems with this restaurant.
First impressions mean a lot and I should have done a u-turn at the door when I saw how grotty and tatty the place was. The owners have absolutely... more

Best fish & chips

By far the best fish and chips I've had anywhere. Looking forward to my June trip to Toronto for a fix.

There’s nothing fancy about this Mount Pleasant stalwart, but you can’t go wrong with their fish and chips. A vat of bubbling oil turns out chunks of meaty-sweet halibut encased in deep golden, crunchy batter. Rough, hand-cut chips are exactly as they should be, the floury potatoes soft inside, well browned and only slightly greasy. Eat in or have it to go — the meal plopped onto white paper,... more

Nothing fancy here, just some of the best fish and chips you'll find this side of the pond. Fresh fried halibut and hand-cut fries are the staple, but the chowder and homemade pies are fantastic as well. There are a few tables inside, but most folks opt for take-out.©10Best.com
