Empanadas. It seems its my “thing” of the past year in terms of something to eat that I’ve deliberately sought out more often than any other food. In doing so, I’ve had a few different takes on it. But in the end, I think I’m really all about the salty, savoury taste that only a delicious melted cheese inside can provide.
Hidden behind a nondescript storefront just north of the Joyce SkyTrain station, Panaderia Latina Bakery serves up mouth-watering South American treats like pandelos de crema (turnovers filled with cream) and sticky-sweet hojaldra (layers of pastry and dulce de leche). Panaderia Latina sells tamales with bone -in pieces of chicken. Quite unheard of in most circles and generally considered a foul practice. It will be my last tamale from there and a zero star review although you cannot leave a review without a rating.

Like this bakery, it satisfies both my husbands need for savoury (tortas! Empanadas!) and my sweet tooth (lots of dulce de leche / caramel coated pastries,).
Couple this with friendly proprietors and a selection of hot sauces, peppers, and snacks makes this a place to revisit.
As an homesick chilean, I must say that their meat empanadas are really good! I also tried the cheese empanadas and the milhojas cake.... very good as well. Will go back again to try the pastel de choclo.
