I have been there maybe 4 times over the past 10 years or so and each experience has been disappointing. I expect better based on the prices and the reputation. The food is nice (it's no Kellsey's) and well presented but it falls short.

My latest trip was in October of '09. I made reservations there for my boyfriend's birthday as he has wanted to try this restaurant out based on what he's heard of it. Our reservation was for 7:30, we didn't leave till close to midnight. Not because we were having a splendid time but because that's how incredibly late all of our food was. We got the apologies and a couple complementary tid-bits, but it's a good thing we didn't make any other plans after dinner! We had a tar tart and a beat salad to start off with, and while they were both good, they weren't amazing. I ordered a duck 3 ways for dinner, the duck confit was dry and not tasty at all. My bf ordered a steak done rare, but it arrived medium. The replacement steak that arrived was done to a medium but it wasn't a well cut steak and it was tough. Otherwise, the atmosphere and the front of the house staff have always been very nice.

"Everything is done very, very well" at this "truly fabulous" North Toronto "institution" where celebrity chef Mark McEwan turns out high-end "seasonal" Continental fare highlighting "interesting flavour combinations"; though a few sniff "the thrill has faded", most agree a "beautiful setting" elevated by "elegant" decor and "first-rate" service ensures "you can never go wrong choosing" it for... more

The soft lighting and strategically situated mirrors wrap the dining room -- and its occupants -- in a lovely glow. Upscale regulars succumb to the seduction of a three-course meal. Celebrity chef Mark McEwan's menu, which changes with the seasons, borrows from Mediterranean, American, and Asian sources, with inspired results. On the list of main courses, you might find grilled veal tenderloin... more

Lovely experience but pricey
August 13, 2014

I organized a group function here and we really enjoyed ourselves. The service we received was the best I've had. The food was wonderful, but I had a hard time justifying the price. It was a full house and they did a great job of keeping the atmosphere romantic and intimate. My only issue is that for the price, there... more

Drove in from Windsor to dine at North 44. Well worth the drive. Will do it again. Staff was SO attentive and food was amazing. We're cold soup fans so we really enjoyed to Pea Soup with Crème Fraiche and Avocado. The Heirloom salad was divine and both our Entrees were amazing. Unfortunately no room for dessert. Chef Sasha is every bit as adorable as what The Heat portrays him to be. We ate... more

Terrific dinner
July 31, 2014

We hadn't been to No. 44 for in a few years but after Friday's dinner we will be back very soon. The food was outstanding especially the banana wrapped halibut, and espresso creme brulee for dessert. The wait staff was friendly, polite and efficient. We're quite lucky to have this restaurant in the neighbourhood.

One of the most notable restaurants, North 44 put Toronto on the dining radar, garnishing praise from a number of international food critics. The décor is understated with soft lighting and mirrors. The service is sublime. Start off with a signature martini such as the Evening Star, a blend of rum, cointreau, lime and pineapple. The menu changes according to the season but is always inspired,... more

North 44 is fine dining at its absolute finest. The menu changes frequently, of course, but starters might be oxtail ravioli with scallops and pancetta, or seared foie gras with Riesling braised apples, toasted brioche, chocolate veal reduction, sage fritters and praline. Mains show an international influence: roasted bison tenderloin with truffle risotto and roasted beets, or grilled yellowfin... more
