My girlfriend and I went to Mr. India on a whim, we heard claims of it being the "Best in Abbotsford". We went and as soon as we entered I knew right away we should have left. But we stayed for the siren call of Butter Chicken.
It took them about 5 minutes to greet and seat us in their empty dine-in area. We ordered hastily and after we got our food the server didn't once leave the back. They hardly even cleaned their dining area, there was plates there from before we arrived, and they were there all the way til we were eating.
The food is another story. The butter chicken tasted like processed meat cubes with condensed tomato soup. It was awful compared to even some store-bought sauces. I was full and felt kind of bloated. They took so long to come out to collect our payment (we never saw a bill) that we probably could have left and they wouldn't have noticed til way later.
The guy who got our payment was juggling a bunch of takeout orders. His hands were stained bright orange, so I assumed he was cooking as well, it didn't occur to me until later whether or not he washed his hands between handling money and the dirty till and food.
But the worst was about 20-30 minutes later. We both got the worst food poisoning imaginable. It could have been unwashed hands from money passed from hand to hand, or from a careless employee forgetting the sink before leaving the restroom, or even some contaminated food, let alone the dirty state of the restaurant. My girlfriend was kept up til late hours unable to sleep due to being sick. I was getting ready to take her to the hospital before she finally fell asleep at 5 am. We're still feeling awful the day after. Definitely not returning to Mr. India again, the $40 wasn't worth the pain.
We only do takeout orders, but there's never been an incident when we weren't happy with our order. Everything they do is excellent. English is sparse with a couple of the counter guys, but who cares? Amazing butter chicken, best in Abbotsford. I'd rather go there than the Shiva any night. The meat cuts are consistently great, not a bunch of knurbly bits or bones as often comes with this sort of food.
We try to stop through whenever we pass by abbotsford. It is fantastic and, although the ambience is rustic, the food is amazing. They do a phenomenal amount of takeout but very little sit down so we always get good service.
If you want fancy surroundings, pass it by. If you want excellent Indian food, it is highly recommended.
My best guess is that my chances of being Indian are dwindling. My own accounts of what happened mean like they are real but I am super sensitive to spicy. My meal tastes great but I couldn't help thinking about how painful it would be if I was eating broken glass. The woman who accompanied me was attractive enough, and she even paid for everything and wanted me to talk about my feelings, but... more
I live in Abbotsford and work out of town, so when I come home, my first stop is usually Mr India. Sometimes my wife will even surprise me and have a to go order waiting for me at home :) By far the best Indian food in the valley, I have tried many. The lunch combo is great as it allows you to pick a couple different items with Naan and rice for a reasonable price. It is not on the menu, you... more
