In 1992, our first Ottawa store was built in an old movie theatre. It quickly became a popular destination and a larger location was soon needed. In 2000 we moved into a marvelously reconditioned building, the first retail store in Canada to comply with C2000 Green Building Certification.

This is a review for MEC's bike services, not the store itself.

For the past probably 10 years, I've been taking my bike to Bertrand's in Hull for my tune ups. They do good work, but they are pricey and while not that far away, a closer place is always more convenient. As such,... more

From its insufferable "bag-free" philosophy, to its unco-operative prices, to the fact that they don't refund parking, going to Mountain Equipment is an experience in being nickle and dimed, this after you wait and wait for service. Want to be bag-free? Go to LLBean.com

MEC was conceived by a small group of Canadian climbers who wanted a place to buy gear not carried by conventional retailers: gear for mountaineering, rock climbing, ski touring, and hiking.

Today MEC supplies outdoor equipment to over 3 million members worldwide.

Mission: to help people enjoy the benefits of self-propelled wilderness-oriented recreation. We do that by selling outdoor gear,... more

The member-owned store provides gear and services that promote recreational activities and strives to behave in an environmentally responsible manner. You'll find climbing and boating equipment, clothing and tents. The store also has an extensive book and map section. Prices are competitive and the staff is very knowledgeable and helpful.
