This little beef-and-fish house opened in 2005 far from the brightest lights of downtown by folks who used to run those glamorous resto-clubs. Here, where the warehouses haven't all turned into high-end lofts yet, two other restaurants were added in 2007 and 2008 directly adjacent: Liverpool House (at no. 2501), an Italian gastropub, and McKiernan (no. 2485), a luncheonette and wine bar.... more
25-seat diner positively oozes charm. Bench seats, old wooden bar and quirky touches everywhere that depict the illustrious life of working class hero Joe Beef. Yup, it’s really expensive. Yup, it’s really delicious. Menu changes daily but there are always to-die-for oysters aplenty. Cross your fingers and pray for the lobster spaghetti.
Portions gargantuesques et qualité d'exécution sans reproche. On prend un verre de Bugey Cerdon et on se commande le spaghetti au homard! De la folie! Tellement délicieux!

With a name like Joe Beef, you might expect the focus here to be squarely on steak. But such is not the case – fresh, market cuisine is the specialty. Whatever is best that day at the nearby Atwater Market is what turns up on the menu that night. Thus, the ever-changing chalkboard menu might feature virtually anything, from pan fried skate wing to tripe to seared tuna to rabbit ballotine.... more
