"Like stepping into an izakaya in Tokyo", this "jumping" Japanese duo in the Downtown Core and Annex takes diners on a "tasty" (if "extremely noisy") adventure filled with "interesting" "freshly prepared tapas of all sorts" and "massive quantities of sake" at prices you "won't even notice on your credit card statement"; the "enthusiastic" staff "operates like a well-oiled machine" and fuels the... more

It's loud, fun and chaotic -- and the bright and delicious food keeps drawing crowds in spite of notoriously long lineups. A great selection of small-plate dishes is served in a pub-like atmosphere -- an izakaya is a Japanese bar that serves food. Highlights include seared seafood, perfect pork belly, great noodles and sizzling hot pots. A second location on Bloor St West, Guu Sakabar, offers... more

Guu Izakaya is the first Toronto outpost of the popular Guu group of restaurants from Vancouver. It's located in an otherwise unassuming strip mall on Church Street, though the striking design and warm atmosphere give it a distinctively cool vibe once inside. The izakaya concept is simple - small plates, raucous staff, plenty of booze - and Guu Izakaya gets it all right. The menu ranges from... more

Casual and fun atmosphere. Each dish was delicious and well presented. the hostesses and hosts really make the place so pleasant, when we left they all say thank you and make your exit a memorable one. I like that you can just relax and be comfortable with good food. It was very busy and a nice break from more formal restaurants.

Fun, relaxed atmosphere! They yell at you when you walk through the door. I went on a date with someone who had been many times before so he took the lead with ordering, everything was divine and meant for sharing.

Japanese restaurant. Tapas restaurant. Drinking establishment which serves food to accompany the drinks (at least according to the definition of Izakaya). Guu Izakaya does it all. This lively and energetic restaurant opened in 2011 after being acclaimed in Vancouver. Communal style tables encourage strangers to get friendly as they share the experience of eating Japanese comfort food. Baked... more

Guu SakaBar was established in the spring of 2011, as Toronto’s second edition to the Vancouver-based Izakaya franchise, which includes Guu Original, Guu with Garlic, and Guu Izakaya in Richmond. Guu SakaBar is a trendy but casual space, with dark tiled walls, long communal wooden tables, and hanging light-bulb fixtures, giving it a chic and somewhat industrial look. The restaurant is loud and... more
