and the fondue is excellent - one of my favorite restaurants in Banff
If you've never had fondue, this is a MUST SEE restaurant. If you have had fondue, this is STILL a must see restaurant. It used to be a swingers club in the 60s, which may not be commonly known, but on each table there is a phone that allows you to call any other table. Catching on? So the attitude here and mood inside are very free spirited, and you'll certainly have a good time and can let loose. The food is cooked by you in either broth or on hot stones (recommended). Meat choices range from beef and chicken to frog legs, venison or alligator. It's on the expensive side, but is an experience you won't forget. A valuable tip: wear a spare set of clothes here, because once you leave you will reek from the cooking and will have to change.
By Far, the most unique dining experience i have ever had. From the choice of meats ( Crocodile, frogs legs, Venison, Elk and wayyy more.) to the maner in which the fodd is cooked. The Hot Stone is by far the best way to go. and it really lets you choose how much you want the meet cooked, from rare to well done! The Elk is absolutely melt in your mouth delicious. Never would of amagined there would be such a big difference in Bison, Beef, Elk and Venison... the Bison is WAYY too tough! but still delicisous!
The best part of this place is the table to table phone service. dont be shy... call up your neighbors and ask them to join you , pretend to be someone else.. anything!
by Marion Ann (from Campbell River) August 2011 - The Grizzly House in Banff is a great experience for lunch and dinner! The restaurant theme is based on a traditional Swiss fondue house, offering authentic cheese and oil fondues or a hot rock option to grill your meal right at your table. There are other items on the menu that are not fondue related as well. The best option is the four course... more
My hubby and I went here on our romantic vacay to Banff.. it was sooo great we go there every time we are in Banff! It is super stinky in the restaurant and you won’t be able to stay long without it clinging to your clothes.. and your hair.. YUCK!!! BUT the food is fantabulous I always get the hot stone… i just like it better…. but they have the traditional oil fondue as well!!! I recommend... more
by Lauren (from Calgary) October 2010 - I went to the Grizzly House with a group of about 10 girlfriends for a 30th birthday party and it was fantastic! I love the circa-70s interior with the low lighting and dark woods. It's like stepping back in time to a funkier, less busy Banff. The staff was great to us and very patient with our loud and boisterous table (I'm guessing it wasn't their first... more
This was a great experience! The food was excellent but it is quite expensive. We had cheese/bread fondue, steak, caribou, buffalo, ostrich, boar, lobster etc on hot rock and chocolate fondue for dessert. Yuuummmmy!!! Be sure to get reservations for dinner.
This restaurant is an institution in Banff. The interior looks as if it was carved from the inside of a tree, with highly varnished wooden walls hung what looks like an entire herd of buffalo heads. The bizarre menu specializes in expensive fondue dinners featuring a veritable menagerie of meat: beef, ostrich, buffalo, rattlesnake, alligator, venison to name a few. The wine list features over... more

Once you enter beneath the steeply-pitched portico, you're in a different world, by virtue of the eclectic decor and the fact that each table has a telephone – just-because. Fondue is the attraction here, either cheese fondue or foods cooked at the table in oil. Another social option is hot-rock cooking. The choices are legion: opt for something tame like beef, chicken and scallops, or venture... more
