Ex-staffers from the Black Hoof are behind this trendy Parkdale Mexican where hipsters mingle at communal tables over tacos and bourbon (it offers more than 35 types); the casual, dimly lit space has a long bar, and no reservations means there are often waits.
Grand Electric has Torontonians flocking to Parkdale to sample the powerful Mexican flavours, absorb the pulsating rhythms and imbibe in brown-hued liquor. The brainchild of former Black Hoof'ians, Chef de Cuisine, Colin Tooke and front-of-house Manager, Ian McGrenaghan, scores of committed customers will wait for 1-3 hours to pack the place from 6pm 'til late, Wednesday to Monday. Run by two former Black Hoof chefs, this boisterous restaurant boasts an extensive selection of high-quality bourbons to complement its short, Mexican-inspired menu featuring ceviches, tacos and ever-changing specials. Dinner Wed.-Mon. Casual. Entrees: $7.50-$14. MC, V.
Grand Electric may not be open as late as some of the other "late night" places, but it sure gives you reason to go there regardless. Tacos and bourbon are sold seven nights a week, with the menu displayed brightly in chalk. You buy per taco, so prices are reasonable, and toppings are as tempting as chorizo and queso to crispy cauliflower. You can also get your guacamole and chips and your tuna... more
