Chinese chinese food

Right on the fringe of Chinatown, you can certainly tell this place is authentic chinese. Restaurant is getting a bit well worn over the years, but the food is consistently good. Maybe not great, but great value and very Chinese. Don't go here if you want upscale Chinese ... this is down to earth fare.

Excellent straightforward food

I value Gee Gong for a number of things. I've traveled very widely and eaten Chinese (Cantonese) food in many countries.

Gee Gong has the best salt and pepper squid I have ever had, the best hot and sour soup and an excellent 3 kinds of seafood chow mein. oddities like garlic snow pea shoots are not on the menu but available, you can ask for them.

Decor is diner, but the food (well, the chef) has been absolutely consistent for over 20 years, which is a value as well.

Normally I love hole in the wall kinds of places. Small, low prices, occasionally dirty places, with an authentic vibe and a hodge podge of interesting characters for clientele. Something about them just feels…real. But rather than get caught up in the idea of the hole in the wall, it’s important to judge them based on the food.
I have some friends who love these kinds of places – and have been... more

Fantastic Peking duck
June 30, 2011

by Henry (from Calgary) July 2011 - Calgary's Chinatown district is littered with many choices for a quick and inexpensive bite to eat and one of the best and most unique is Gee Gong Restaurant. Located in the heart of Chinatown on Centre Street it is rather hard to spot for first time visitors due to an old and undecorated store front. Looking from across the street the signage is rather old... more

Great Chinese!

by (from ) October 2010 - Gee Gong is located right on Centre Street in China Town. It has that really authentic look to it...almost like you are on some side street in a busy Chinese city. There is even meat hanging in the window, which I think is really cool. I went to Gee Gong with some friends, who swore it was some of the best Chinese food in China town. I had some wonton soup and chicken... more

Pretty good, just.....
March 31, 2010

by Mary (from Calgary) April 2010 - Gee Gong Restaurant must have been around for a long time and there is a reason. It is there for the taste, the sentimentality and the I guess for the selection. But it's a place where if you are a regular, you really just look past the bad decor, the grunginess of the place and just sit and eat. You enjoy the business of the other usual customers I guess.... more

Gee Gong Restaurant is hiding just off Center Street, on the edge of Calgary\'s Chinatown. Decor is not their strongest point, but the food and friendly staff definitely make up for it. They offer chicken, shrimp and seafood dishes as well as BBQ meat at very reasonable prices: around $4 for appetizers and $7 for main dishes. The no-frills hot pots are popular; choose beef and bean curd or... more
