All hail the glorious bagel! Grandpa Shlafman knew what he was doing when he opened a small bagel bakery on Fairmount street in 1949. Three generations later, people still line up for his hand-rolled, wood-fired oven-baked goodness served hot, 24 hours a day. The debate rages over who makes the best bagel: St-Viateur or Fairmount. Why debate? Try both!

Bagels in these parts of North America are thinner, smaller, and crustier than the cottony monsters posing as the real thing outside the province. Here, they're hand-rolled, twist-flipped into circles, and baked in big wood-fired ovens right on the premises. Fairmont was founded in 1919 and now offers 20 types, including trendy options like muesli and (shudder) blueberry, but why opt for... more

The Original Fairmount Bagel Bakery
74 Avenue Fairmount Ouest

Montreal’s first bagel bakery, continues the tradition with a time-tested recipe of hand-rolling, and baking in a wood burning oven. This is another perfect example of a single store, making one thing, really, really well.

I enjoy bagels, but growing up in Western Canada, my exposure to this carbohydrate... more

In flavor they are as good as you can imagine, the best bagle I've ever had, not even NYC bagels beat them, the place itself is a bit unconfortable and small, you cannot even see all the varieties of bagels they have on the displays because is full of packaged product around.

After reading profusely about the iconic Fairmount Bagel, calling itself the pioneer of bagel stores in Montreal, I must admit I had some fair expectations; I expected a bagel that would "wow" me and that I would remember afterwards. Unfortunately, none of these expectations were met...

My husband had the "power" bagel, I had the garlic one. While I appreciated the freshness and purity of the... more

A Montr--al classic, Fairmount Bagel founder Isadore Shlafman has been baking these original bagels since 1949. Their hand-rolled, blanched bagels are baked in a wood-fired oven to create a chewy bagel that is sweet, dense with a larger hole than New York bagels. There are 20 varieties for choose from ranging from plain to sesame seed to spelt and chocolate chip. The store sells all the other... more

Bagels, for the uninitiated, are round pieces of dough boiled and then fire-baked; the Montreal bagel differs from the New York variety in its smaller size. They are fantastic toasted, with cream cheese or spreads, and for sandwiches; most buy them by the dozen. Only years of practice will allow the connoisseur to distinguish between these bagels and those from St-Viateur , which lies one... more

Montréal-style bagels are denser and chewier than their New York counterparts, and most locals will tell you that Fairmount makes the best. There are 20 or so varieties, all baked in a wood-fired oven. Flavors range from plain, sesame seed and onion to pesto-black olive, spelt and chocolate chip. You can also get soft pretzels, matzo bread and bagel chips. All this, 24 hours a day!
