Opinion-ated April 29, 2009
The o/o has a giant chip on his shoulder!

I had the opportunity to take my children, mother and elderly great-aunt on a visit to the beautiful community of Steveston yesterday (April 27th) to enjoy the glorious sunshine and sights. While there - and our main reason for going - we stopped in for lunch at "Dave's Fish & Chips" where we enjoyed the best halibut & chips around! On our stroll back along Moncton Street to where our vehicle was parked we also stopped in at a beautiful gift shop where a wonderful lady served us - great shop, terrific service and lovely selection.

Unfortunately, we also decided to 'stop in' at the Romania Country Bread shop.... Quite obviously there has been great diligence in creating the 'old world charm' of Romania, however, the owner/operator seems to have one gigantic chip on his shoulder.... We made the mistake of voicing our opinion that a $10 loaf of bread was a little more than we were prepared to pay yet we told him we were sure it was well made but it was simply out of our price range. This fellow became absolutely belligerent - to my elderly mother and even older great-aunt (80 ). He started asking us (very loudly) if we were accusing him of being a "peasant" or a "pauper" and then he went on to yell "What am I going to tell my Chinese landlord when he comes to collect the rent?" I was gobsmacked, I could not believe that this man would speak to a group comprised of elderly women, children and myself. I was actually frightened for my mothers safety at one point because he was so emphatic when he was yelling that he was starting to compromise my mother's 'personal space'. I quickly managed to hurry my family out of the store just as he became distracted by a new 'victim', oops I mean customer.

I could not in good conscience just 'let it go'. I am not altogether sure of who to tell but it is my belief that he needs psychological help. I'm fairly certain that it shouldn't take too long for him to go out of business but I sure hope no one gets hurt or worse before that happens.

A real old style tasty European bread. The oven and burning wood make the difference. And the slow, not accelerated, dough processing probably. I make my own bread home, since the endless list of chemicals you find on each bread label at any grocery make me feel like a chicken in an industrial farm, but no way to get this quality. Not for people who value the quantity more than the quality of... more

It isn't the bread that I have any problem with here....it is quite good (albeit a basic european type loaf), it's the sly way they swindle you into having to purchase it. They force the bread into your hands, then say "ten dollars"! Although I like their bread, I never want to go there again as this is bordering dishonesty to me. After leaving, I was walking down the street with my partner,... more
