I send copies home to my family in New Brunswick and they were amazed by the differences between our city newspaper ( Saint John Telegraph Journal - with no online access lol)
Moving to Calgary I was amazed at what the writers said. I was amazed at not only the opinions they published but the hired writers.

As others said, way too many ads, iffy writers that often carry similarly strong opinions, and outdated. I think the Sunshine girl is kind of a cool tradition, but it still kind of makes the newspaper dated.

I won't comment on the merits of the writing, as the paper will likely appeal most to those of a conservative bent. The paper makes no bones about it, and that is not why I am rating the paper.
