A bit over-rated

Went there with the missus and both of us found the food just too salty and over priced. Not my cup of tea!

Top 10

Every serious food lover within driving distance of Basho owes himself or herself the experience of dining on Chef Tak Ishiwata's superb food. Ishiwata is a food artist, a fact consistently obvious when tasting his culinary creations. A favourite starter is his salmon parfait which I described as "an eye-catching seafood presentation in a brandy snifter. The bottom of the glass was covered with salmon tartare, and then a layer of aioli followed by black flying fish roe to the depth of about half-an-inch. More salmon tartare followed, capped by a dollop of aioli and then, side-by-side, orange and black flying fish roe. This was accompanied by a handful of the lightest, crispiest fried wontons I have ever tasted."

The martinis are so ooo good. We have had the sushi, the duck and steaks and everything has been delicious.........in fact, we would say that it is the best restaurant in St. John's. The atmosphere is great and the service whenever we have been there has been excellent.

Very good Asian Fusion, Overpriced
June 12, 2010

Very good quality in general. Excellent seafood. The spicy lobster was wonderful. Many of the Maki (rolls) have aoli/mayo inside, which is NOT Japanese style at all. Sushi was very much in the Korean style. Good, but not as nice as Japanese style sushi for my tastes. I would say this is an Asian + North American Fish "Fusion", not... more

A worthy choice for martinis/cocktails

A local friend recommended Basho for drinks (upstairs bar/lounge area) so my girlfriend and I gave it a try. We were very pleased with our decision.. Friendly, knowledgeable service, with good attention to detail. We're looking forward to going again in the near future and this time trying some of the food.
