Avoid at ALL COSTS $$$

This place only cares about your wallet and how much money they can siphon from it. Any questions to the battery of very unnecessary tests they want your animal to take is received as an insult by them and they will then accuse you of not caring for your pet. These guys are to be avoided due to their money grubbing ways…. They don’t do this for the animals, they’re doing it to prey on the wallets of unsuspecting pet owners.

Business Model is Upsell, Upsell, Upsell

I fully agree with the previous reviewer. I've had pets my whole life and have never been to a place like this. Everytime I went there they hit me from all angles starting with the receptionist to the vet tech, to the vet trying to get me to spend as much money as possible before I left. The final straw was when I took my cat in for an infected claw he had lost getting chased up tree by a dog. This happened once before when I lived in the Annex. At that time I went to the Annex Animal Hospital and they prescribed some antibiotics, gave me some surgical soap and my cat was soon as good as new. I think it was like $100 max. What does this place do? They try to milk me for like $1500. Telling me he needs ultrasounds and lab work and insinuating that if I don't do all these fancy treatments that I must not really care about my pet. I told them exactly what I thought they were up to. Let's see... fancy high park people with fancy pets = money. I even wrote them a letter telling them that I would not be returning to their clinic and why. They responded by saying in a letter that they just want the best possible care for my pet. Yeah right. I won't be back and advise everyone to go somewhere else unless you have the money to prove you really love your pet.

Do you want fries with that?

If you are looking for a vet in Toronto go anywhere but HIGH PARK ANIMAL HOSPITAL (the one on Dundas just east of Runnymede). I am 38 and have had cats my entire life; Neither I nor anyone in my family have had experiences like I have had with this vet in the past 5 years.

Prior to dealing with this vet, I had two other vets in Toronto and neither of these would I say anything bad about. Queen West Animal Hospital was my last vet and they were amazing; They were friendly and they took good care of your cat; occasionally you have bills bigger than the others, but you win some and you lose some.

HIGH PARK ANIMAL HOSPITAL in comparison to any other vet that I have ever been to (about 6 others in Toronto and Mississauga) has employees that were most likely trained selling mattresses and used cars (in my opinion) and now they sell vet services. In the past, I have never been a skeptic of VETS. It is a business yes, but, all of my experiences were good ones. If they are in the business to make money, which everyone is, they shouldn’t make it so obvious.

-Every time I go to this vet for something basic like a check-up they try to up sell me and get me to spend more money. They use scare tactics and make you feel like you need to do all these things to your pet. I am not about to simply hand money over to anyone who is "good at selling used cars" and I ask them for options and priorities but yet each time I leave spending about $500-700 more than the check-up should have cost.

-the last time, I went, I had not been in 2 years and I told my vet that I didn't come back for such a long time as each time I come to see them, I spend $500-700 more than the cost of the check-up. This time, my cat was puking so something was wrong and guess what, another $700 bill plus a referral to another Doctor which costs $1000 more (BUT I HAVE no issues with this Doctor that I paid the $1000 to for the record). I don't mind paying $700 once and a while, but, this is habitual. I think they must have notes on my file saying (HE WILL PAY $700 MAX). A few normal check-ups like any other vet I have been to in 38 years would be great, but, it is like taking your car into the car dealership. ......IT GETS BETTER..... The latest time (Jan 2009), I asked the vet why every time I come to the VET I get huge bills, and the vet "ASKED ME IF MY CAT WAS A MEMBER OF THE HOUSEHOLD OR A PET"……………..ARE YOU KIDDING ME, IT’S A CAT, BUT DON’T PLAY THIS DR FEEL BAD CARD W/ME! This was the last straw for me. I spent the $1000 after this at another specialist only to learn that 95% chance my cat had cancer and if I wanted 100%, I needed to pay for a BIOPSY which was about $3000-5000. LUCKY ME, my cat has been seemingly very happy for the last 6 months and more affectionate than ever (maybe because I spend so much time with her when she was ill 6 months ago).

NOW, I AM taking HER to be euthanized and they want to examine her before putting her down and this is another $57. I have since talked to other vets and this is a mandatory fee vets need to charge, however, most vets will waive it if they are the vet that has taken care of the cat. I have decided to put my cat down at another vet as it frustrates me to go to this vet (is it obvious).

-IF YOU DECIDE TO MAKE HIGH PARK ANIMAL HOSPITAL YOUR VET YOU MAY regularly leave with things to take care of your pet at home; it could be premium pet dog food or pills or stool sample kits etc…. some of these things I took home I did so because it was the lesser of two evils of more tests at the VET (BUT ISN’T THAT their job).

BOTTOM LINE HERE is that I have talked to many PEOPLE about this and it is only fair that my story is posted so that others don’t have this same experience with my vet – HIGH PARK ANIMAL HOSPITAL. About 10 vets exist in BWV/JUNCTION/HIGH PARK and if you are looking for a good vet, don't even waste your time with HIGH PARK ANIMAL HOSPITAL.

When I took my kitten Sinclair in for a breathing problem (sneezing a lot with a lot of snot and closed eyes) - I was nervous --- at first. From the first moment meeting the receptionist and sitting down in the foyer, I was greeted withsmiles. Everyone fawned over my fluffy Sinclair. I was soon put in the exam room which was very spacious and had lots of light - I was still nervous but Dr.... more

Dr. Ginger Louws is an incompetent unprofessional poor excuse for a veterinarian, who clearly should not handle any animal due to her "hard personal life" If my job is to save lives I am going to save them and not make excuses for why I would forget to inform a patient who has paid a costly bill some simple directions such as things that can be done at home to save the life of the sick pet for... more

Do not go to this clinic!
August 31, 2010

My bunny was not doing well, and so I took her to the High Park clinic as it was the closest location to my house. The only vet available was Dr. Lane, and because this was urgent, I had no choice but to bring her there. My bunny wasnt eating so I thought something got stuck in her throat or maybe a hairball, but she did have an appetite as she attempted to eat the solid food we were... more
