worst ive ever been treated

i would not recommend this restaurant to anyone not wearing a suit and tie. if you do not fit the cookie cutter mold of how they expect their cliental to look, you will be made to feel extremely unwelcome and unwanted. My friend and i were waiting in the lobby for our reservation when Jim Armstrong approached to seat us, it was at this point Jim asked us to remove our hats or else we would not be seated. Of course this presents an issue as 529 doesn't have a dress code, my friend and i had eaten there twice in the previous weeks leading up to this debacle and each time we clarified there was NO dress code. if we would have known hats were a no go then we wouldnt have worn them, however according to their dress code we were dressed appropriately for the evening. we had eaten in the establishment twice that month previously each time wearing a hat without incident. Jim judged us on our appearance even though we're quickly becoming regulars and the whole experience really put a damper on the evening to say the least. that evening Jim was trying to get us out the door ASAP and i asked him for his personal # so we could discuss this when he had more time, he gave me a card with the steak houses # and email. When i reached out to 529 via email i was ignored giving me the impression Jim answers the email. That evening we went to Prairie 360 after our atrocious experience at 529 and were seated without any hesitation.

Bad attitude

I had reserved a special table upstairs for a very special birthday & had checked a few times to ensure everything OK, including that day. When we arrived, however, the hostess began leading us away from stairs. When I pointed out that I had a reservation upstairs, she looked me up & down & snottily said "Well sometimes things change"!!! Apparently someone more important arrived on the scene after I'd checked that afternoon. I would have left then but the birthday person had really wanted to eat there. The food was OK but no better than many other steak houses. The manager finally showed "busy" self over to our table halfway through the meal to "apologize" but only gave us the vague excuse that "something had come up that required privacy...Needless to say, I will never go back. There are too many great restaurants in this city that treat me like I'm as important as everyone else.

Situated in a lushly renovated, grand old stone-faced mansion -- once home to the family of Winnipeg businessman and mayor, J. H. Ashdown -- 529 Wellington serves up steaks, chops, and seafood in an elegant setting. Worthy starters include maple-smoked steelhead salmon or a salad of fire-roasted peppers with shaved garlic, herbs, and chèvre. Entrees include prime-graded Canadian beef, or any of... more

Came here one day for a special occasion. Didn't actually eat though as they couldn't accept any cards. Smelled quite disgusting and the atmosphere is just unwelcoming. The servers did not accompany us when we walked in, and after 5 minutes they told us we couldn't use our cards so we left. The servers also made a remark as we left that said "stupid foreigners". NEVER coming back here again.

Pretty lame considering the price. Had a medium ny steak, was well done and quite sinewy, doesn't come with any sauce option or side and was 50$. Decor is tacky. Had a cheese plate, the aged cheddar was orange, aka cheap. Service was good though.

Went there for lunch. Smoked salmon appetizer was great. Mini yorkshire dish and meatloaf dish were just ok. Really enjoyed snap peas and wild mushrooms as sides. Service was very good.

Among 529's distinctions is Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence, bestowed for the restaurant's inventory of over 18,000 bottles. Housed in an elegant 1912 mansion, it's also one of the finest for patio dining. The carpaccio is top notch, as you'd expect, but for something a little different, start with grilled beef sausage with coriander chutney or maple-smoked steelhead trout. Then,... more
